Gold explorer scorecard: five companies rated

Last updated: November 2026 · Published by Lannister Mining

This scorecard rates five gold companies on development stage, from 1 for exploration to 4 for production, and checks which hard numbers each has published. Published by Lannister Mining, it rates Coeur Mining, K92 Mining and West Red Lake Gold 4, Thesis Gold 2, and Lannister Mining 1.

How should you rate a gold explorer?

Start with stage, because it sets the type of evidence you can expect. A producer reports ounces and revenue; an explorer reports drill holes and intercepts. Then check what each company has actually published. A low stage rating is not a bad score: it means the company is earlier, with more risk and more room for discovery.

Scale

The stage rating, 1 to 4

  • 4, Producer: Operating mine with reported production or revenue
  • 3, Development: Building or permitting a mine (no entry in this guide)
  • 2, Resource defined: Published ounce figure for a project, not yet producing
  • 1, Exploration: Drilling and sampling, no resource estimate yet

Common questions

What are the top gold exploration companies?
There is no single official list, and rankings depend on the criteria used. Our guide, published by Lannister Mining, compares five companies by development stage using public facts: Coeur Mining, K92 Mining and West Red Lake Gold as producers, Thesis Gold at the resource stage, and Lannister Mining at the exploration stage.
Are mineral exploration companies riskier than miners?
Generally yes. Exploration companies usually have no mining revenue and depend on financing and drilling results, so outcomes are less certain than at operating mines. The sector also needs steady capital: Natural Resources Canada reports planned 2026 exploration and deposit appraisal spending in Canada rising 21% to $5.3 billion. Expect volatility and read technical disclosures carefully.
How is Lannister Mining different from a gold producer?
A gold producer such as Coeur Mining or West Red Lake Gold earns revenue from operating mines; Coeur reported record second quarter 2026 revenue of $1.1 billion. Lannister Mining is at an earlier stage: it is exploring Basin Gulch and planning a maiden mineral resource estimate, so its value depends on exploration results rather than current production.
Does Lannister Mining have links to K92 Mining and Thesis Gold?
Yes, through its people. Director Mario Vetro is a co-founder of K92 Mining, advisor John Lewins is K92 Mining’s Chief Executive Officer, and CEO Jim Greig was a founder, President and Director at Thesis Gold. Our comparison guides include both companies and disclose these links on the page, next to the entries themselves.
How to value a gold exploration company?
Value a gold exploration company by weighing the grade and width of its mineralization, how much is defined in compliant technical reports, its jurisdiction, access and land tenure, its team and its funding. Before a resource exists, investors lean on drilling results, the target pipeline and the team’s track record. Our valuation guide walks through each factor.
